The Commissioners of the Revenue Association will hold its annual food drive in August. Community members are encouraged to donate by bringing items to the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office at the Surry County Government Center.

“Thank you for supporting the Commissioners of the Revenue Statewide Commissioners and Cans Food Drive and the Virginia Foodbank to help fight hunger with a generous donation to support your local office,” organizers stated.

This effort comes as Surry County continues to serve its community, including families whose children attend schools in the area. The Surry County Public Schools District enrolled 694 students during the 2023-24 school year, according to data from the Virginia Department of Education (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). Of these, Surry Elementary School had the highest enrollment with 283 students (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).

Demographic data show that Black and white students each made up 43.4% of total enrollment, with both groups totaling 301 students respectively (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). The district saw a slight increase in student numbers compared to last year, growing by 1.3% from an enrollment of 685 (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). Sixth grade was reported as having the largest class size at 59 students, while pre-kindergarten had the fewest with 34 (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).

The food drive is part of ongoing efforts to address food insecurity in partnership with organizations such as Virginia Foodbank.
