The City of Petersburg has announced a lane closure on West Bank Street as part of a bridge and tunnel repair project over Brickhouse Run Stream. Beginning Saturday, September 6 at 8:00 am, the eastbound lane in the 100 block of West Bank Street, located between Sycamore and Market Streets, will be closed to traffic. Vehicles will be restricted to a single center lane. No truck traffic or parking will be allowed in this area, with only limited short-term unloading spaces available.

Residents living on West Bank Street from the bridge area to Sycamore Street are being asked to place their trash cans behind the Exchange Building. Parking on city-owned property behind the Exchange Building will not be permitted during this period.

The closure comes after ongoing flooding caused significant damage to the Brickhouse Run Tunnel. City officials are collaborating with engineers to design a new tunnel and roadway that can better withstand future conditions. The infrastructure project is backed by more than $7 million in grant funding from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and is expected to take several months.

Detour signs will be posted to direct traffic, and new center roadway lines will be marked. “The City thanks residents, businesses, and commuters for their patience and cooperation as we work to complete this essential infrastructure project,” officials stated.
