The Petersburg Bureau of Police announced on March 25 that residents should ignore a circulating text message claiming to be an urgent notice from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The police said the message is a scam and urged the public not to respond or click any links provided in the text.

The warning comes as local authorities seek to protect residents from fraudulent schemes that could compromise personal information or lead to financial loss. Scams like these often use official-sounding language and threats of legal action to pressure recipients into compliance.

According to the police, the fraudulent message states: “Virginia DMV Urgent Final Notice: Enforcement Action Starts March 26th! Our records indicate that you have an unpaid traffic ticket as of today. Under Virginia Code 15C-16.003, failure to settle this by March 25th, 2026, will result in severe consequences: Entry into the DMV violation database; Suspension of your vehicle registration starting March 25; Suspension of driving privileges for 30 days; Mandatory payment of a 35% service fee at a toll booth; Potential prosecution and negative impact on your credit score.” The message then instructs recipients to act immediately by visiting a suspicious website link and threatens license suspension and further legal action if ignored.

Authorities say such messages are designed to create fear and urgency, prompting individuals to provide sensitive information or make payments through unofficial channels. The police advise anyone who receives similar communications not to reply or open any included links.

Residents are encouraged to contact official agencies directly if they have concerns about their driving record or outstanding tickets rather than responding to unsolicited messages.
