Essex County ranked 65th among counties in Virginia by annual earnings per resident, according to data obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau in August.

The median income of Essex County residents was an inflation-adjusted $24,889 per year. Essex County had 4,470 households in 2017, with a population of 11,083.

The county with the highest median resident income in the state was Arlington County. Arlington County's median income was $64,686 per year after adjusting for inflation – $39,797 more than Essex County. It had 102,310 households in 2017 and a population of 229,534.

Sussex County had the lowest annual resident income among counties in Virginia, with a median income of only $16,191 per year. That was $8,698 less than the median income in Essex County at the time. Sussex County had 3,388 households in 2017 and a population of 11,595.
