Hampden-Sydney College Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 24

Junior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) scored a game-high 18 points, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a season-ending 77-69 decision to Guilford (NC) College in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Basketball Tournament on Thursday night at the Salem Civic Center in Salem. Sophomore Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) added 11 points for the #7 seed Tigers, who trailed just 34-33 at halftime against the #2 seed Quakers (18-6), who were led by Jaylen Gore with 16 points. H-SC completes the campaign with a final record of 14-11.

"This team made our jobs as coaches a lot of fun this year," said third-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We have amazing young men in this program and we are extremely proud of everything we accomplished this year. We are thankful for everything our two seniors, Jake (Hahn) and Jack (Wyatt), have added to Tiger basketball. They have left this program better than it was when they arrived. Love those guys and will miss them tremendously."

H-SC jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage just 1:54 into the contest after a pair of three-point field goals each from Hubbard and Clements, along with a basket inside by Hubbard. The Tigers extended the margin and took their largest lead of the contest at 21-12 with 12:46 on the first-half clock after another three-pointer, this time from sophomore DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA). GC rallied back and was within 21-20 at 9:20, but H-SC pushed the margin back to 26-20 with 7:02 left in the half after a pair of free throws by Clements. The Quakers, however, finished the opening 20 minutes on a 14-7 run to lead 34-33 at the intermission. Clements had 12 first-half points for the Tigers.

H-SC and GC began the second half playing evenly with the Tigers taking a 37-36 lead at 18:31 following a steal and slam dunk by Clements, and the Garnet & Grey led 41-40 at 17:07 after an offensive rebound basket from sophomore Josiah Hardy (Ashburn). It was tied at 44-44 with 15:03 remaining after another offensive rebound basket by Hardy, but the Quakers ran off eight unanswered points to lead 52-44 at 12:44. A layup from Clements and a three-pointer by sophomore Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) had the Garnet & Grey within 52-49 at 11:50, and H-SC continued to battle and tied the contest at 61-61 with 6:21 left to play—sparked by a pair of three-pointers by sophomore Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC). Unfortunately, GC scored seven-straight points to lead 68-61 at 4:50, and the Quakers secured their victory with 9-12 free throws over the final 3:16.

Clements led H-SC with his game-high 18 points, adding three assists and two steals. Hubbard finished with his 11 points, adding five rebounds and two blocked shots for the Tigers. Brazil and fifth-year Jake Hahn (Ruckersville) each contributed eight points, with Hahn adding five rebounds in his final game for the Garnet & Grey. H-SC shot 42% (25-59) from the field, including 38% (9-24) on three-pointers, and 91% (10-11) at the free throw line.

Gore led GC with his 16 points, adding four assists, while Jorden Davis had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Quakers. Tyler Dearman and Liam Ward each contributed 14 points. GC shot 39% (20-52) from the field, including 25% (6-24) on three-pointers, and 84% (31-37) at the line—the difference in the contest.

Coach Kimbrough could return as many as 15 lettermen for next season, including all five starters.
