Nationally-Ranked No. 21 Hampden-Sydney Tied For Eighth At The Jekyll Island Collegiate

Nationally-ranked No. 21 Hampden-Sydney College posted an opening round of two-under par 286 on Friday to stand in a tie for eighth among 30 teams at the Jekyll Island Collegiate being played at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Georgia. Senior John Hatcher Ferguson (Rocky Mount), sophomore Meade Slonaker (Penn Laird) and freshman Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) are leading the Tigers with their respective rounds of one-under par 71 that has the trio tied for 27th individually among the 150 golfers.

Nick Rubino posted five birdies and 10 pars during his round on the par 72, 6,700-yard Pine Lakes' course at Jekyll Island GC. Ferguson had four birdies and 11 pars on the day, while Slonaker had three birdies and 13 pars. They were followed closely by junior Alex Rubino (Charlotte, NC) (73, T-49th) and senior Hunter Martin (Gloucester) (74, T-66th). Alex Rubino added three birdies and 11 pars, while Martin had one birdie and 14 pars.

The highly-competitive tournament field includes eight Top 10 and 15 Top 25 ranked programs among 22 schools in the Golfstat Top 50 national rankings overall. No. 2 Emory (GA) University and No. 6 Carnegie Mellon (PA) University are leading the event with their respective opening rounds of nine-under 279. Cooper Hrabak of top-ranked Methodist (NC) University is the individual leader through 18 holes at five-under 67.

H-SC will continue its competition in the three-day, 54-hole tournament on Saturday in Georgia.
