Hampden-Sydney Falls To Nationally-Ranked Randolph-Macon 8-1

Senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) had two hits and one RBI, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 8-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision at home to nationally-ranked archrival Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) added two hits on the day, as well, while freshman Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) took the pitching loss for the host Tigers (18-13, 10-7 ODAC) against the visiting Yellow Jackets (22-7, 11-4 ODAC).

H-SC scored one run on six hits with four errors … scoring the lone run in the third inning. R-MC, ranked 30th in this week's Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Division III Poll, scored eight runs on 13 hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, three runs in the third and four runs in the seventh. The two teams were playing for the second-straight day, following a 5-2 win by the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday in Ashland.

In the third, Badin (2-3) reached on an infield single to third base, advanced to second on single to center field by sophomore Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (1-3) and scored on a two-out, RBI single to left center field by Karnes (2-3, RBI).

Gregory (1-2) started and pitched the first 2.0 innings, allowing four hits and four runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and four walks. Junior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) tossed 4.2 innings, yielding six hits and four runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Four Tigers combined to pitch the final 2.1 innings, including freshman Dylan Robbins (Mechanicsville), who pitched the final scoreless inning, allowing one hit with no strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC will play on the road at Emory & Henry College in non-conference action on Saturday, April 23, a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Emory. Please be sure to check our website at hscathletics.com for the latest weather-related schedule adjustments.
