Hampden-Sydney Wins Fourth-Straight, Defeats Lynchburg 89-72

Senior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) scored a game-high and season-high 25 points, adding eight rebounds and a game-high four assists, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 89-72 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball road win at the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday night in Lynchburg. Junior Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) added 14 points, classmate Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) had 11 points and junior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the visiting Tigers (6-3, 4-0 ODAC), who led 45-30 at halftime en route to their fourth consecutive victory. Piercen Young scored 18 points for the host Hornets (2-6, 1-3 ODAC).

"Great road ODAC win tonight," said fourth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "The beauty of our team is that we have so many weapons. We can have a different player step-up on any given night. Tonight, RC played big for us and we had several others make key plays. Now it's time to lock in on Exams!"

H-SC opened the contest with a basket down low by Hardy, but Lynchburg responded with an 11-2 run to lead 11-4 at 18:06, and the hosts led 14-7 at 17:28. The Tigers, though, answered right back with a 14-0 run to go in front 21-14 with 14:00 on the clock—getting three-point field goals from junior DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA), senior Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) and Brazil. The visitors pushed the run to 21-2 to lead 28-16 at 8:48 following seven-straight points by Clements, before the Hornets closed to within 33-25 at 4:49. The Garnet & Grey, however, finished the half with a 12-5 run to lead 45-30 at the intermission—getting a pair of conventional three-point plays from Wright and junior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC).

Lynchburg began the second half with a quick 9-4 run to close to within 49-39 at 17:29. H-SC, however, again answered with a 7-2 run to lead 56-41 with 15:35 remaining—getting a three-point play from Clements, two free throws by Hardy and a basket from Brazil. The Tigers maintained their comfortable advantage the rest of the way, leading 67-47 at 11:25 after a layup by senior Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) … 70-52 at 9:59 following three-point play from sophomore Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC) … 79-59 at 5:26 after two free throws by Clements … and 89-69 at 1:45 following another conventional three-point play from Clements toward the final margin.

Clements led H-SC with his game-high and season-high 25 points, including 8-8 free throws, adding eight rebounds and a game-high four assists. Hardy finished with 14 points and five rebounds for the Tigers. Brazil contributed 11 points, while Hubbard added 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double this season—along with a game-high four assists to equal his career-best, as well. H-SC shot 49% (32-66) from the field, including 35% (9-26) on three-pointers, and 73% (16-22) at the free throw line.

Young led Lynchburg with his 18 points. Trey Pittman had 13 points for the Hornets. Lynchburg shot 44% (26-59) from the field, including 43% (9-21) on three-pointers, and 73% (11-15) at the line.
