The Surry County Government Center will stay closed on Thursday, August 21, due to an ongoing emergency HVAC issue. Officials advised residents to check back on Thursday afternoon for further updates regarding operations on Friday, August 22.
“We apologize for the continued inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding,” county officials said in a statement.
The closure may affect some community services. The Surry County Public Schools District is the only school district in the area, with a total enrollment of 694 students during the 2023-24 school year (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). Among the three schools in Surry County, Surry Elementary School had the highest enrollment last year at 283 students (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). Black and white students each represented 43.4% of the student body, totaling 301 students each (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). Enrollment in county schools increased by 1.3% from the previous year’s total of 685 students (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).
Sixth grade had the largest number of students with 59 enrolled, making up about 8.5% of all students, while pre-kindergarten had the smallest group with just 34 children or roughly 4.9% (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).
Updates regarding when normal operations will resume are expected as repairs continue at the government center.
