The Surry County Government Center is set to reopen on Friday, August 22, 2025, following emergency HVAC repairs that caused an early closure yesterday and a full-day closure today.
In a statement issued by county officials, they said, “We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding during yesterday’s early closure and today’s full-day closure while emergency HVAC repairs were completed. Thank you for bearing with us as we worked to restore safe conditions for citizens and staff. We look forward to serving you in person again tomorrow.”
The reopening comes as Surry County continues regular operations in other public sectors. For example, the Surry County Public Schools District enrolled 694 students during the 2023-24 school year, according to data from the Virginia Department of Education (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). Among the three schools in the district, Surry Elementary School had the highest enrollment with 283 students (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).
Demographic information shows that Black students represented the largest ethnic group in county schools during this period, totaling 301 students or 43.4% of total enrollment. White students accounted for an equal number at 301 students (43.4%) (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). The total student population saw a slight increase of 1.3% over the previous year’s enrollment of 685 (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).
Sixth grade had the largest class size with 59 students making up 8.5% of total enrollment; pre-kindergarten was the smallest group with only 34 students or about 4.9% (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).
The county government center’s reopening allows services to resume after temporary disruption.
