The Surry County Government Center will be closed to the public on Friday, August 15, 2025, for repairs to its heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. The closure is intended to maintain safety, comfort, and operational efficiency within the facility.
County offices housed in the building, including the Surry County Public Schools (SCPS) School Board Office and the Department of Social Services, will not be accessible during this period. The Surry County General District Court and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office will remain open as usual.
Surry County Public Schools is the only school district in the county and had an enrollment of 694 students during the 2023-24 school year. Surry Elementary School had the highest enrollment among the three schools in Surry County with 283 students enrolled. Black students represented the largest ethnic group in county schools last year, totaling 301 students or 43.4% of enrollment; white students accounted for another 301 students at 43.4%. Sixth grade had the largest class size with 59 students, while pre-kindergarten was smallest at 34.
Normal operations at the Government Center are expected to resume on Monday, August 18, 2025.
