On July 22, 2025, Surry County will engage in the Virginia Operations Exercise (VOPEX), a comprehensive emergency preparedness drill. The exercise involves the Surry County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), Dominion Energy’s Surry Nuclear Power Station, and various local, state, and federal agencies including fire and rescue services, law enforcement, and health departments.
The drill will take place along Route 10 (east and west) and Hog Island Road. Residents may notice increased activity with emergency vehicles, military-style equipment, and additional personnel present throughout the day.
Officials emphasize that this is merely a drill. “Please do not be alarmed by the presence of emergency or artillery-style vehicles,” they advise. No public action is necessary.
The VOPEX drill is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and disaster readiness. It focuses on ensuring that Surry County and its partners can respond effectively to potential nuclear emergencies.
Authorities express gratitude for community awareness and cooperation in maintaining safety and resilience.
