Amelia County Public Schools issued the following announcement on Aug. 27
Amelia County Elementary School (ACES) has had several confirmed cases of scabies. ACES and ACPS are working closely with the Piedmont Health District (PHD) to take steps to contain the outbreak. Staff members and the school nurse have been alerted to watching for signs of scabies. Teachers have been asked to remove and sanitize any personal cloth items in classrooms and to send home cloth student items for families to wash and sanitize. This is being done as a precautionary measure for all ACES classrooms. ACPS has provided deep cleaning of school buses and classrooms, starting with the classroom where the original case was confirmed.
Cleaning also includes treatment for carpet or area rugs in classrooms. While this is not called for by CDC or the PHD, and scabies is transmitted by human to human contact, we are doing everything possible to ensure that transmission is not due to our school facilities. Deep cleaning will continue throughout this evening and this weekend. Parents are asked to be watchful for any signs of scabies and to seek medical treatment if in doubt.
Please review the enclosed Scabies Fact Sheet from the Virginia Department of Health. Thank you for your continued support of Amelia County Public Schools.
