Hampden-Sydney College plays its first home football game of the 2022 campaign against Widener (PA) University on Saturday afternoon, September 10, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers are 0-1 this season, while the visiting Pride are also 0-1. H-SC opened the season on the road last weekend, dropping a 52-48 non-conference shootout at Wabash (IN) in a renewal of The Gentlemen's Classic in Crawfordsville, Indiana. The visiting Tigers led 14-3 after one quarter, 28-17 at halftime, and 35-30 after three quarters, before the host Little Giants rallied with 22 points in the fourth quarter for their home win. WU opened at home last weekend, dropping a 42-20 decision to Rowan (NJ). The host Pride trailed 21-0 at halftime, and 35-6 after three quarters, before scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
The Series
The all-time series between the two schools is tied at 1-1. Widener won last year's meeting by a score of 34-27 on September 11, 2021 in Chester, Pennsylvania. H-SC defeated WU, known as the Pennsylvania Military College at the time, 24-18 in 1958 in a contest played in Pennsylvania, as well.
Scouting The Tigers
H-SC is led offensively by senior quarterback and team captain Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg). Bernard passed for 346 yards (28-41-1) and a career-best four touchdowns, adding a touchdown on the ground, as well, in the season-opener at Wabash (IN). It was the fifth 300-yard passing game of his career.
The running game features the junior tandem of Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC) and Josh Jones (South Hill). Frost rushed for a career-high 101 yards on 17 attempts (5.9) and two touchdowns, adding eight yards receiving on one catch at Wabash. It was the first 100-yard rushing game of his career. Jones added 63 yards on 12 carries (5.3) with 26 yards receiving on three catches in Indiana.
Senior tight end David Byler (Virginia Beach) led the receiving unit at Wabash with a career-high 94 yards receiving on a career-best eight receptions and two touchdowns. Classmate and wide receiver Talen Smith (Ruther Glen) finished with a career-high 43 yards receiving on three catches and one touchdown, while junior wide receiver Jamahdia Whitby (Williamsburg) had a career-high 32 yards receiving on three receptions and one touchdown, and averaged 16.5 yards on six kick returns, including a long of 20 yards. Junior wide receiver Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC) added 90 yards receiving on three receptions before leaving with an injury.
Junior safety James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) finished with a game-high 15 tackles to lead the Tigers on defense during week one. Junior linebacker Jaylin Jones (Rustburg) added eight tackles, including one tackle for loss, while junior linebacker Dorian Green (Martinsville) had seven tackles. Sophomore defensive end Jordan Akerson (Roanoke) had 2.5 tackles for loss among his four tackles.
Senior placekicker Jack Breedlove (Atlanta, GA) was a perfect 6-6 on PATs at Wabash. Sophomore left-footed punter George Langhammer (Roanoke) averaged 40.8 yards on five punts, including a long of 55 yards, and one downed inside the 20.
Scouting Widener
WU is expected to be led offensively by sophomore quarterback Jeff Chaplin, senior running back Shawn Thompson, along with graduate wide receiver Ty Holbert and junior wide receiver Isaac Hostetter.
Chaplin passed for 146 yards (10-18-1) and one touchdown against Rowan (NJ). Thompson rushed for 61 yards on 17 attempts (3.6) with two touchdowns. Holbert had 34 yards receiving on three receptions with one touchdown, and averaged 26.7 yards on three kick returns, including a long of 37 yards. Hostetter had 19 yards receiving on two receptions.
Senior linebackers Colin Murt and Kevin Davis led the Pride on defense during week one. Murt had 10 tackles, including four solo, while Davis added eight tackles, including five solo.
Sophomore placekicker Ryan Pattison was 0-1 on PATs against Rowan. Sophomore punter AJ Celona averaged 35.5 yards on four punts, including a long of 40 yards, with one downed inside the 20.
Last Meeting (09/11/21)
H-SC dropped a hard-fought 34-27 non-conference decision on the road at WU in Chester, Pennsylvania. The visiting Tigers trailed just 21-17 at halftime, and were within 21-20 early in the fourth quarter, before the host Pride scored two late touchdowns during the final five minutes to secure their home win.
Among the ODAC Leaders
Tanner Bernard leads the ODAC in passing yards (346), touchdowns (4), completions (28), attempts (41), completion percentage (68.3) and passing efficiency (166.5).
Melik Frost leads the ODAC in rushing yards (101), touchdowns (2), attempts (17) and yards per attempt (5.9), and is tied for fifth in all-purpose yards (109).
David Byler leads the ODAC in receptions (8) and receiving touchdowns (2), is third in receiving yards (94) and 10th in yards per reception (11.8).
Braeden Bowling leads the ODAC in receiving yards per reception (30.0), is fourth in receiving yards (90) and tied for 10th in receptions (3).
James-Ryan Salvi leads the ODAC in total tackles (15).
George Langhammer is tied for first in the ODAC in punting average (40.8).
Surpassing 300 Yards in the Air
Tanner Bernard has passed for over 300 yards five times in his H-SC career, including his season-opening 346-yard, four-touchdown effort at Wabash (9/3/22). He had a career-best 393 yards passing against Washington and Lee (10/2/21), completing 22-34 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Bernard passed for 316 yards and one touchdown at Widener (PA) (9/11/21), and for 327 yards and two touchdowns at Guilford (NC) (9/25/21). He passed for 309 yards and three touchdowns at Guilford (3/19/21), as well.
First 100-Yard Rushing Game
Melik Frost rushed for over 100 yards for the first time in his H-SC career with his season-opening 101-yard, two-touchdown effort at Wabash (9/3/22). He surpassed the century mark on only 17 carries (5.9).
Run at the Record Book
Twenty-third year head coach Marty Favret is the second-winningest football coach in school history with 140 victories (140-82), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 90-48 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six Division III Football Championship appearances. Coach Favret's 140 wins are second only to the legendary Hall of Fame head coach J. Stokeley Fulton (143), who is the winningest and longest-tenured of all ... Coach Fulton led H-SC for 25 seasons (1960-84) and compiled an overall record of 143-99-5 with nine conference championships and three post-season appearances.
It's A Small World
H-SC, Widener and Wabash each participated in the eight-team 1977 NCAA Division III Football Playoffs. H-SC fell to Albany State (NY) 51-45 in the quarterfinals, before Widener defeated Albany State 33-15 in the semifinals. Widener and Wabash played for the national championship with Widener claiming the 39-36 victory in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl in Phenix City, Alabama.
