Hampden-Sydney Opens ODAC Play At Bridgewater On Saturday At 2 p.m.

Hampden-Sydney College plays its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football game of the season on the road at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon, October 1, at 2 p.m. in Bridgewater. The visiting Tigers are 1-2 overall, 0-0 in the ODAC, while the host Eagles are 3-0 overall, 0-0 in the ODAC. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch as well on the Bridgewater Eagles Sports Network.

Fans are asked to purchase their tickets ahead of arriving to the stadium. Due to the rainy weather, tickets will not be sold at the gate. As is the same for all home football contests, game tickets can be purchased online HERE Tailgating will take place as normal in Mapp Field and opens at normal times with gates to the stadium opening 90 minutes prior to opening kickoff. Bridgewater also wants to remind fans that umbrellas are not permitted in the Jopson Athletic Complex, especially while in the stands.

Last Week: H-SC 70 - GC 28

H-SC won its first game of the season past Greensboro (NC) 70-28 on September 17 on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers jumped out to a 28-0 lead after one quarter and led 42-21 at halftime against the visiting Pride. BC took a 48-7 road win at North Carolina Wesleyan on Sept. 17. The visiting Eagles led 24-7 at halftime before outscoring the host Battling Bishops 24-0 in the second half for their victory.

The Series

H-SC leads the overall series against BC 61-16, including a 24-14 home win last November 6 at H-SC. The Tigers have won 11 of the last 14 games played between the two programs. H-SC is 11-10 against the Eagles under the direction of 23rd-year head coach Marty Favret. The Tigers and BC first met on the gridiron in 1929, a 38-0 road win for the Garnet & Grey.

Scouting The Tigers

H-SC has been led offensively through three games by fifth-year quarterback and second-year team captain Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg). Bernard has passed for 674 yards (48-81-1) and seven touchdowns, adding two touchdowns on the ground, as well. Bernard missed the most recent game against Greensboro (NC) due to injury.

Junior quarterback Andrew Puccinelli (Glen Allen) started against Greensboro (NC), passing for a game-high and career-high 305 yards (28-33-2) and four touchdowns, adding a touchdown on the ground, as well.

The running game features junior Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC). Frost has rushed for 371 yards on 56 attempts (6.6) and six touchdowns, adding 116 yards receiving on eight catches and one touchdown.

Sophomore wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has led the receiving unit through three games with 223 yards receiving on 17 receptions and two touchdowns. Senior tight end David Byler (Virginia Beach) has 193 yards receiving on 16 catches and four touchdowns, while freshman wide receiver Mason Cunningham (Arlington) adds 139 yards receiving on 11 receptions and one touchdown.

Junior safety James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) leads the Tigers on defense with 37 total tackles, including 18 solo and 19 assists. Junior safety Will Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) adds 25 total tackles (5-20), including one tackle for loss and one pass breakup. Junior linebacker Dorian Green (Martinsville) has 21 total tackles (8-13), including 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception and two quarterback hurries, while sophomore defensive end Jordan Akerson (Roanoke) has 2.5 tackles for loss among his 11 total tackles (2-9) and three quarterback hurries.

Senior placekicker Jack Breedlove (Atlanta, GA) is 19-20 on PATs. Sophomore left-footed punter George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 38.9 yards on seven punts, including a long of 55 yards, and one downed inside the 20. Junior wide receiver Brice Wilson (Charlottesville) has averaged 24.0 yards on five kick returns, including a long of 31 yards.

Scouting Bridgewater

BC is expected to be led offensively by the quarterback tandem of senior Malcolm Anderson and junior Jaylen Wood, sophomore running back Kennedy Fauntleroy and senior running back Albert Mensah, along with senior wide receiver Viante Tucker and junior wide receiver Freddie Watkins.

Anderson has passed for 378 yards (33-50-0) and five touchdowns, adding 80 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Wood has passed for 282 yards (27-40-1) and two touchdowns, adding 49 yards on the ground. Fauntleroy has rushed for 101 yards on 12 attempts (8.4) and two touchdowns, while Mensah has rushed for 47 yards on 19 attempts (2.5) and two touchdowns, adding 13 yards receiving on two catches and one touchdown. Tucker has 132 yards receiving on 13 receptions and one touchdown, and Watkins has 121 yards receiving on six receptions and three touchdowns.

Redshirt-junior safety Aaron Moore has led the Eagles on defense with 18 total tackles (14-4), including two tackles for loss, one sack and three interceptions. Senior linebacker Shawn Harris (13-2), sophomore cornerback Noah Hines (9-6) and junior safety Val West (9-6) each add 15 total tackles.

Sophomore placekicker Jackson Hendren is 15-17 on PATs, and 3-4 on field goals, including a long of 29 yards. Senior punter Garrett Graves has averaged 40.5 yards on 13 punts, including a long of 70 yards, with eight downed inside the 20.

Last Year: H-SC 24 - BC 14

Tanner Bernard passed for a game-high 240 yards and one touchdown, adding a touchdown on the ground, to lead H-SC to hard-fought 24-14 home win past BC at Everett Stadium. The Tigers took an early 14-0 lead after one quarter and led 17-0 at halftime, before the Eagles closed to within 17-7 after three quarters. H-SC extended the advantage to 24-7 early in the fourth quarter, while BC added a late touchdown to provide for the final margin.

ODAC Leaders - Top Five

Melik Frost leads the ODAC in rushing yards (371), rushing yards per game (123.7), rushing touchdowns (6), all-purpose yards (487) and all-purpose yards per game (162.3), is second in rushing attempts (56) and third in rushing yards per carry (6.6).

David Byler is tied for first in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns (4), fourth in receptions (16), and fifth in receiving yards (193) and receiving yards per game (64.3).

James-Ryan Salvi is second in the ODAC in total tackles (37) and tackles per game (12.3).

Tanner Bernard is tied for second in the ODAC in passing touchdowns (7), third in passing yards (674), tied for third in completions (48) and fifth in attempts (81).

Austin Fernandez is third in the ODAC in receptions (17), receiving yards (223) and receiving yards per game (74.3), fourth in yards per reception (13.1), and tied for fifth in receiving touchdowns (2).

Brice Wilson is third in the ODAC in kick return average (24.0).

Jack Breedlove is tied for third in the ODAC in kick-scoring (19) and is fourth in PAT percentage (95%, 19-20).

Dorian Green is tied for fourth in the ODAC in interceptions (1) and tied for fifth in total tackles (21).

300-Yard Passing Games

Tanner Bernard opened the season with two consecutive 300-yard passing games ... and has now passed for over 300 yards six times in his H-SC career. He passed for 346 yards and four-touchdowns at Wabash (9/3/22), and added 328 yards and three touchdowns against Widener (9/10/22). Bernard had a career-high 393 yards passing against Washington and Lee (10/2/21), completing 22-34 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Bernard passed for 316 yards and one touchdown at Widener (PA) (9/11/21), and for 327 yards and two touchdowns at Guilford (NC) (9/25/21). He passed for 309 yards and three touchdowns at Guilford (3/19/21), as well.

Andrew Puccinelli passed for a career-high 305 yards against Greensboro (9/17/22), completing 28-33 passes with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

200-Yard Rushing Games

Melik Frost rushed for a career-high 211 yards on 21 carries (10.0) with four touchdowns against Greensboro (9/17/22). It's the sixth-best single-game rushing effort in program history. It was the second 100-yard effort of his H-SC career, including a season-opening 101-yard, two-touchdown effort at Wabash (9/3/22). He surpassed the century mark on only 17 carries (5.9).

William V. Campbell Trophy®

Michael Harris (Ashland) was named a semifinalist for the 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award, as announced on September 28 by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). He was among 156 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of only two from the ODAC and 29 selected from Division III. Michael is a Dean's List student majoring in theatre with a minor in music and has attained a 3.29 GPA.

ODAC & D3football.com Honors

Melik Frost was named the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week and to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his 270-yard (211 rushing, 59 receiving), five-touchdown game against Greensboro on Sept. 17.

Run at the Record Book

Twenty-third year head coach Marty Favret is the second-winningest football coach in school history with 141 victories (141-83), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 90-48 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six Division III Football Championship appearances. Coach Favret's 141 wins are second only to the legendary Hall of Fame head coach J. Stokeley Fulton (143), who is the winningest and longest-tenured of all ... Coach Fulton led H-SC for 25 seasons (1960-84) and compiled an overall record of 143-99-5 with nine conference championships and three post-season appearances.
