Hampden-Sydney Stands Ninth At The O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament

The Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted a first round score of 301 on Monday to stand ninth among 18 teams at The O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament being played at The Cardinal by Pete Dye golf course in Greensboro, North Carolina. Senior Alex Rubino (Charlotte, NC) leads the Tigers with his three-under par round of 68 that is tied for first individually among the 102 collegiate golfers.

Alex Rubino posted six birdies and nine pars during his opening round on the par 71, 6,755-yard layout. He is being followed by senior Trevor Elliott (Richmond) (76, T-38th), along with sophomores Josh Newman (Charlotte, NC) (78, T-48th), Brian Polinchock (Moseley) (79, T-58th) and Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) (80, T-64th). Elliott had four birdies and six pars, Newman contributed 12 pars, Polinchock had two birdies and 10 pars, and Nick Rubino added two birdies and eight pars.

The tournament field features seven teams that are ranked among the Top 25 nationally in the latest Golfstat Division III Poll, including four of the Top 10—No. 7 Christopher Newport is leading the event with its one-over par 285. Alex Rubino is tied with three others for the individual lead (68), including CNU's Alex Price, No. 15 Guilford College's Michael Vick and Shenandoah University's Ben Gray.

H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the two-day, 36-hole tournament on Tuesday in Greensboro.
