Hampden-Sydney Plays At Ferrum On Saturday At 3:30 p.m.

Hampden-Sydney College plays on the road for the second-straight week at Ferrum College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action on Saturday afternoon, October 8, at 3:30 p.m. in Ferrum. The visiting Tigers are 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the ODAC, while the host Panthers are winless at 0-4 overall, 0-1 in the ODAC. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch as well on the Ferrum Sports Network.

H-SC dropped a 27-17 ODAC decision on the road at Bridgewater College on Oct. 1. The visiting Tigers took a 10-7 after one quarter, and the contest was tied 10-10 at halftime and 17-17 after three quarters, before the host Eagles added 10 fourth-quarter points—including the game-winning touchdown with 3:43 remaining—for their home win in the ODAC opener for each school.

The Series

H-SC leads the overall series against FC 4-3, including a 42-28 home win last season (10/23/21) and a 49-21 home win during the previous shortened spring season (4/3/21). The latter was played in the third-place game of the ODAC's first-ever Football Championship Weekend. The Tigers and Panthers first met on the gridiron in 2011, resulting in a 38-14 home win for H-SC.

Scouting The Tigers

H-SC is led offensively by fifth-year quarterback and second-year team captain Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg). Bernard has passed for 995 yards (74-125-1) and eight touchdowns, adding two touchdowns on the ground, as well. Bernard missed the Greensboro (NC) game (9/17) due to injury.

The running game features junior Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC). Frost has rushed for 404 yards on 70 attempts (5.8) and seven touchdowns, adding 123 yards receiving on 10 catches and one touchdown. Junior Josh Jones (South Hill) adds 107 yards on 21 carries (5.1).

Sophomore wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has led the receiving unit with 347  yards receiving on 24 receptions and three touchdowns. Senior tight end David Byler (Virginia Beach) has 278 yards receiving on 23 catches and four touchdowns, while freshman wide receiver Mason Cunningham (Arlington) adds 217 yards receiving on 17 receptions and one touchdown.

Junior safeties Will Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) (17-25) and James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) (20-22) lead the Tigers on defense with 42 total tackles each, including five tackles for loss, one interception and one pass breakup by Pickren, and 0.5 tackles for loss and one pass breakup by Salvi. Junior linebackers Dorian Green (Martinsville) (8-13) and Jaylin Jones (Rustburg) (5-16) each have 21 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception and two quarterback hurries by Green, and 1.5 tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry by Jones.

Senior placekicker Jack Breedlove (Atlanta, GA) is 21-22 on PATs, and 1-2 on field goals (30 yards). Sophomore left-footed punter George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 43.3 yards on 11 punts, including a long of 62 yards, and three downed inside the 20.

Junior wide receiver Brice Wilson (Charlottesville) has averaged 24.0 yards on five kick returns, including a long of 31 yards. Senior wide receiver Talen Smith (Ruther Glen) has averaged 24.0 yards on two kick returns, including a long of 29 yards. Mason Cunningham has averaged 6.0 yards on three punt returns, including a long of nine yards.

Scouting Ferrum

FC is expected to be led offensively by freshman quarterback Jesper Korkalainen, sophomore running back Zach Smiley, and senior wide receiver Daniel Lamb. Korkalainen has passed for 249 yards (6-40-0) and one touchdown in three games. Smiley has rushed for 209 yards on 62 attempts (3.4) and two touchdowns, adding 42 yards receiving on four catches and one touchdown. Lamb has 187 yards receiving on 23 receptions and two touchdowns. Senior linebacker Michael Lopez has led the Panthers on defense with 24 total tackles (11-13), including two tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble and one pass breakup. Junior defensive lineman Will Hairston adds 22 total tackles (6-16). Sophomore placekicker Seth Deaton is 5-6 on PATs, and 3-5 on field goals, including a long of 38 yards. Sophomore punter Josh Luckett has averaged 37.7 yards on 31 punts, including a long of 57 yards, with 11 downed inside the 20. Junior wide receiver NaShawn Greene has averaged 21.6 yards on nine kick returns, including a long of 37 yards. Junior running back Kai Bowers has averaged 11.3 yards on four punt returns, including a long of 17 yards.

Kaleb Smith rushed for a game-high and season-high 138 yards and three touchdowns to lead H-SC to 42-28 home win past FC during Homecoming on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Tanner Bernard passed for 297 yards and three touchdowns, as well. The Tigers led 21-7 after one quarter, and 28-21 at halftime, before the Panthers tied it at 28-28 through three quarters; however, H-SC scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns for the victory.

ODAC / NCAA Rankings

Tanner Bernard leads the ODAC in passing yards (995), passing yards per game (331.7), completions per game (24.7) and total offense (332.3), is second in passing touchdowns (8), third in passing efficiency (145.6), passing yards per completion (13.45) and passing yards per attempt (7.96), and fourth in completion percentage (59.2). He ranks fourth in Division III in passing yards per game, and fifth nationally in completions per game and total offense.

Melik Frost leads the ODAC in rushing yards (404), rushing yards per game (101.0), all-purpose yards (527), all-purpose yards per game (131.8) and total touchdowns (8), and is second in rushing touchdowns (7) and rushing yards per carry (5.77). He ranks ninth nationally in rushing touchdowns and 11th in total touchdowns.

Austin Fernandez leads the ODAC in receptions (24) and receptions per game (6.0), is second in receiving yards (347) and receiving yards per game (86.8), tied for third in receiving touchdowns (3), and fifth in yards per reception (14.5).

George Langhammer leads the ODAC in punting average (43.3). He ranks seventh nationally.

David Byler is second in the ODAC in receptions (23) and receiving touchdowns (4), tied for second in receptions per game (5.8), third in receiving yards (278), fourth in receiving yards per game (69.5) and fifth in total touchdowns (4).

Will Pickren is tied for second in the ODAC in total tackles (42) and tackles per game (10.5).

James-Ryan Salvi is tied for second in the ODAC in total tackles (42) and tackles per game (10.5).

Jack Breedlove is tied for second in the ODAC in kick-scoring (24) and is third in PAT percentage (95%, 21-22).

Mason Cunningham is fifth in the ODAC in receptions (17) and receptions per game (4.3).

300-Yard Passing Games

Tanner Bernard has passed for 300-plus yards in each of his three games played this season ... and has now passed for over 300 yards seven times in his H-SC career. He passed for 346 yards and four-touchdowns at Wabash (9/3), 328 yards and three touchdowns against Widener (9/10) and 321 yards and one touchdown at Bridgewater (10/1). Last season, Bernard had a career-high 393 yards passing against Washington and Lee (10/2/21), completing 22-34 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He passed for 316 yards and one touchdown at Widener (PA) (9/11/21), and 327 yards and two touchdowns at Guilford (NC) (9/25/21). Bernard passed for 309 yards and three touchdowns at Guilford (3/19/21), as well.

Run at the Record Book

Twenty-third year head coach Marty Favret is the second-winningest football coach in school history with 141 victories (141-84), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 90-49 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six Division III Football Championship appearances. Coach Favret's 141 wins are second only to the legendary Hall of Fame head coach J. Stokeley Fulton (143), who is the winningest and longest-tenured of all ... Coach Fulton led H-SC for 25 seasons (1960-84) and compiled an overall record of 143-99-5 with nine conference championships and three post-season appearances.
