Hampden-Sydney Hosting No. 2 Randolph-Macon On Wednesday At 7 p.m.

Hampden-Sydney College welcomes archrival and nationally-ranked No. 2 Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball action on Wednesday night, January 4, at 7 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. It's the first of three home games out of the next four games overall, while the first home contest for the Garnet & Grey since November 30. H-SC has won seven consecutive games and is now 9-3 overall, 4-0 in the ODAC, while second-ranked R-MC has won nine-straight and is 11-1 overall, also 4-0 in the ODAC. The Tigers and Yellow Jackets played a game designated as non-conference earlier this season on Nov. 19 in Ashland with the home team, ranked No. 1 at the time, winning 61-59. The contest on Wednesday night will be available to watch on the Tiger Sports Network live video stream at hscathletics.com, pregame airing at 6:30 p.m.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fourth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 113-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Caleb is 39-31 overall at the College, including 21-19 in ODAC games.

Scouting Hampden-Sydney
The Tigers are getting votes in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 and have won seven-straight contests, including their most recent game vs. Berry (GA), 83-64, at the Music City Classic on December 20 in Tennessee. H-SC has three players averaging in double-figure scoring, led by junior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 13.8 points and 6.9 rebounds, followed by senior guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) (12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists), along with junior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) (10.2 points, 4.0 assists, 21 3FGs). The Tigers are shooting 47% (349-747) from the field, including 37% (105-283) on three-point field goals, and 72% (147-203) at the free throw line. H-SC averages 79.2 points, and allow 67.0 points, for a +12.2 scoring margin.

Seven-Game Winning Streak
H-SC has posted seven-straight wins while outscoring its opponents 84.1 to 65.1, an impressive +19.0 margin, along with a +7.3 rebounding margin (41.0 to 33.7) and a +5.6 turnover margin (14.3 to 19.9). The Tigers have also averaged 16.7 assists and 11.7 steals during the seven contests. It's the longest winning streak for the program since an eight-game streak during 2014-15.

Scouting No. 2 Randolph-Macon
The defending NCAA Division III National Champion Yellow Jackets, ranked No. 2 in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, are coached by eighth-year head coach Josh Merkel. R-MC has won nine-straight contests, including its most recent game vs. Maryville (TN), 81-68, on Dec. 30. The Yellow Jackets have two players averaging in double-figure scoring, led by senior All-American forward Miles Mallory with his 16.1 points and 9.3 rebounds, followed by senior guard Josh Talbert (13.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists). R-MC shoots 48% from the field, including 32% on three-pointers, and 69% at the line; scoring 75.7 points, and yielding only 57.2 points, for a +18.5 scoring margin.

Series History (Since 1956)
H-SC and R-MC are playing for the 157th time since 1956. The Yellow Jackets lead the series, 101-55, though their advantage as members of the ODAC since 1989 is closer at 49-31. R-MC has won 11-straight games between the two schools, including the 61-59 home win on Nov. 19, 2022. The last win in the series by the Tigers was a 63-56 home victory on February 1, 2017.

Junior guard DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) scored a game-high 17 points off the bench, but H-SC dropped a 61-59 non-conference basketball decision on the road at nationally-ranked No. 1 R-MC in Ashland. Junior guard/forward Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) added 10 points and seven rebounds for the visiting Tigers, who fell behind 14-0 at the start and trailed 32-24 at halftime. Miles Mallory had 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the host Yellow Jackets.

Tigers Take Down No. 1
Davidson Hubbard scored a game-high and career-high 26 points, adding a game-high nine rebounds, to lead H-SC to an 85-70 non-conference upset win on the road at nationally-ranked No. 1 Christopher Newport on Dec. 13 in Newport News. Ryan Clements added 15 points for the visiting Tigers, who trailed 38-37 at halftime, before outscoring top-ranked CNU 48-32 in the second half. Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy each had 10 points for the visitors. The host Captains fell for the first time this season and had their 22-game home winning streak stopped.

H-SC Impressive At Music City Classic
The Tigers won two games at the Music City Classic on Dec. 19-20 at Welch College in Gallatin, Tennessee, defeating Transylvania (KY) 82-54 on Dec. 19, before taking an 83-64 victory past Berry (GA) on Dec. 20. H-SC was led by Adam Brazil (14.5 points, 3.0 assists, 7 3FGs), Ryan Clements (13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals) and Davidson Hubbard (10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds). The Tigers took control of each contest early, leading 38-17 at halftime vs. TU, and 41-23 at halftime vs. BC.

2022-23 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior forward Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) and senior guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach), along with Adam Brazil. Turner is serving in the leadership role for his second season, while Harris and Brazil are first-year captains. Chase is the son of Samuel and Demia Turner and is majoring in government with a minor in leadership in the public interest. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English.

Roster Breakdown
H-SC features 21 student-athletes from six different states and the District of Columbia. Leading the way with the most Tigers is North Carolina with six, followed by Virginia (4), Georgia (4) and Tennessee (4), along with Florida (1), Maryland (1) and D.C. (1).

From H-SC To Division I Head Coach (X3)
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 13th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his second season at Utah State and his seventh season as a DI head coach (UMBC) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his fifth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 242-158 at UCI ... Odom was 115-76 overall, including 18-16 at USU and 97-60 over five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 68-60 at Longwood.
