Hampden-Sydney Runs Past Visiting Bridgewater 80-63

Junior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) had a double-double with a game-high 18 points, adding 13 rebounds to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 80-63 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball home win past Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Senior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA), along with juniors Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) and DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA), each added 14 points, while junior Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) contributed nine points and seven rebounds for the host Tigers (12-4, 7-1 ODAC), who led 42-28 at halftime en route to their 10th win in the last 11 games. Alec Topper had a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the visiting Eagles (8-7, 3-3 ODAC).

"Proud of the guys for protecting home court today," said fourth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "Good to see some of the students back as well! Good afternoon for the Tigers."

H-SC, getting votes (32) in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, fell behind 5-4 early before scoring eight unanswered points to lead 12-5 at 14:45—getting baskets from Clements, Wright, Hardy and Hubbard for a lead that would not be relinquished. BC did respond with six-straight points to get to within 12-11 at 12:01, but the Tigers used a quick 10-3 run to lead 22-14 with 8:21 on the clock after a three-point field goal by Clements. A three-pointer from Brazil pushed the advantage to 27-16 at 6:44, and the Garnet & Grey expanded the margin to 42-25 with 1:10 left in the half following another basket by Brazil. It was 42-28 at the intermission as Clements finished with 10 first-half points, with Hardy, Hubbard and Wright each adding eight points during the opening 20 minutes.

H-SC led 46-30 early in the second half after a jumper by Hubbard and two free throws from Wright, and the lead was 48-35 at 15:58 following a jumper by sophomore Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN). The Eagles used a quick 7-0 run to close to within 48-42 with 14:23 remaining, but two more free throws from Wright and another basket by McGowan had the Tigers ahead 52-42 at 13:15. BC was within 54-48 with 10:38 on the clock, but H-SC answered once-again, this time with a 20-8 run to take its largest lead of the contest at 74-56 and only 1:45 left to play. Hubbard sparked the outburst with eight points and Clements added four points during the late run. A pair of free throws each from Hardy and Brazil helped provide for the final margin.

Hubbard led H-SC with his team-high 18 points, adding 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, along with two assists and a game-high two steals. Clements, Hardy and Wright each finished with 14 points for the Tigers, with Clements adding five rebounds and a game-high three assists, and Wright adding a game-high three assists, as well. Brazil contributed his nine points and seven rebounds, as well as a game-high two steals. H-SC shot 46% (32-69) from the field, including 13% (3-23) on three-pointers, and 72% (13-18) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 44-20 advantage in points scored in the paint, and a 21-11 edge in second chance points—outrebounding the visitors 50-35 with 18 offensive rebounds.

Topper led BC with his 16 points and game-high 15 rebounds for a double-double. Shod Smith and Aaron Oates each had 13 points for the Eagles, with Oates adding six rebounds. BC shot 33% (20-60) from the field, including 30% (8-27) on three-pointers, and 79% (15-19) at the line.

H-SC will play two games on the road next week, beginning with an ODAC contest at Randolph College on Wednesday night, January 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Lynchburg, followed by a non-conference game at Salisbury (MD) University on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. in Salisbury, Maryland.
